Located halfway up Mt. Takuhiyama on Nishinoshima Island, Takuhi Jinja Shrine has been a place to worship a deity that protects the safety of voyages for hundreds of years. After climbing the steep, two-kilometer-long mountain road from the parking lot, visitors will arrive at a building called Unpyokaku. This is the chief priest's principal residence, and during certain times worshippers can also stay overnight to pray. In addition, walking a short way through the shrine grounds surrounded by old cedar trees will reveal the beautiful main shrine building inside the carved-out hollow of a rock wall. The unique and fascinating scenery that can be viewed from the trees is certainly not something to miss.
In order to reach Takuhi Jinja Shrine, visitors will need to take a ferry from the mainland. It is customary for boats departing from Nishinoshima Island to sound a foghorn, which is said to be a prayer to protect the voyages to and from the shrine.
