Shitamachi Museum

Art & Architecture History

Shitamachi Museum was created and exists to protect the Tokyo "Shitamachi" (Downtown) culture that prospered from the Edo period until the vast majority of it was destroyed by air raids in the Second World War, by collecting and displaying artifacts and reconstructing typical Shitamachi features in it's exhibitions. On the first floor of the museum for example there is a life-size replica of a Edo period merchants house, so you can get a taste of the type of things that were made and sold at the time, with a rickshaw out the front also! The second floor hosts a variety of different exhibits with old toys, kitchen utensils, games etc, so you can have a peek into what live was like for local downtown inhabitants until the Second World War.
