Nogi Shrine

Culture Experience History

Nogi Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Tokyo dedicated to general Nogi Maresuke. General Nogi and his wife committed suicide after the death of Emperor Meiji in 1912 which marked the end of an area. It was a display of loyalty that many of Nogi's contemporaries found inspiring. The shrine is built next to the house where the couple killed themselves. The house itself is open to visitors only on a few days every year.
