Kiyomizudera Temple (Kyoto)

Art & Architecture Beautiful Scenery Culture Experience History

Kiyomizudera Temple (also known as kiyomizu-dera or Kiyomizu Temple) is perhaps the most famous Buddhist temple in Kyoto. The scenery of Kiyomizudera's viewing platform with the backdrop of the modern city is iconic and has become a symbol of Japan more generally, one that evokes the interesting contrast between tradition and modernity that Japan is so well-known for. The temple is located in the scenic Higayashiyama (lit. Eastern mountain) area of Kyoto, at the top of a sloping shopping street with many small crafts and souvenir shops. The name kiyomizu literally means pure water and refers to the properties of a waterfall on the temple grounds, which is said to bestow certain blessings on those who drink its water. Kiyomizudera is particularly beautiful during the cherry blossom season and during the autumn colors, but it can get very crowded during these seasons. The temple also has regular illumination ('light up') events during which it opens in the evening. Check ahead because opening times may change and parts of the temple may be under reconstruction.
